Engineered wood flooring
Engineered wood or planks are also known as real wood flooring, as the whole board is made of different woods. The top layer is made of solid wood, i.e., the wear factor. Below the solid wood, there are layers of the wood cross-ply laid at a 90-degree angle to the top layer to create strength. The bottom layer is then at 90 degrees to the latter to add stability. There are 14, 15, and 18mm boards available which can be sanded and re-finished up to 3 times. There is also a 20mm board available which can be sanded and re-finished several times and has the life span of a solid wood floor sometimes outlasting the building itself. Engineered or real wood flooring can be installed in areas where solid wood is not compatible such as some basements, subfloors with underfloor heating and conservatories. The engineered floors offer more choice and can be laid where there is a different subfloor in the same area, i.e., existing floorboards with joists and concrete bases for extension or vice versa. Compared to solid wood, the engineered floor offers more choice and can be laid over various subfloors and is usually fitted with a high-density foam foil-backed underlay for insulation. This also levels out any undulations in the subfloor.
Parquet flooring
The timeless elegance of parquet flooring showcases the finest traditional flooring craftsmanship. Parquet blocks can be arranged in various patterns to suit your lifestyle and enhance your environment. This type of flooring is perfect for schools, gymnasiums, restaurants, dance floors, and residential spaces, and it can also withstand wheeled traffic. Parquet blocks are precisely machined to ensure tightly interlocking joints on all edges, providing exceptional strength. Each block is individually glued to the subfloor in the chosen patterns, and the thick wear layer (approximately 10mm) above the tongue and groove allows for multiple rejuvenations, likely outlasting the building itself.
Available in 15mm or 20mm thicknesses, parquet blocks come in various lengths and widths, with customisable patterns to meet your needs. Special sizes can be manufactured upon request, and options include Iroko, Merbau, Rhodesian, Teak, European oak, American oak rustic, American oak prime, Mahogany, Rhodesian teak, Genuine teak, and Maple, with some species offered in prime and natural grades.
Parquet battens and panels
Parquet flooring can also be made up of battens or panels. Parquet battens are usually 10mm or 6mm thick and come in a variety of sizes which can be stuck to a ply subbase generally 18mm WBP ply. These battens can be pinned to match existing traditional parquet laid in a herringbone pattern with a two-line border, generally being wenge or mahogany. Very fancy panels are also available and can completely transform a room.
Solid hardwood flooring
A single piece of wood with a specific thickness, available in various wood types, colours, and patterns. It comes in two finishes: pre-finished and unfinished. Most solid hardwood flooring needs to be or machine-nailed and requires a wooden subfloor, ideally 18mm WPB plywood. Solid wood blocks can be adhered to different types of subfloors.
Wood mosaic flooring
Wood mosaic flooring typically measures 7-8mm in thickness and is available in various panel designs. Common patterns include the 5-finger and 7-finger mosaics, arranged at 90 degrees to one another, which were popular in the 60s and 70s and are still accessible for repairs and installations. However, the selection of flooring species is limited.
Installing wood mosaic flooring is more complex than traditional flooring and requires careful planning beforehand. Achieving equal cuts on both sides of the room, particularly when fitting panels, demands a high level of skill and time investment. This type of flooring can be adhered to a sand or cement screed base or a minimum of 18mm WBP plywood.
" Mark arrived to quote and I felt in safe hands straight away. He provided an honest quote and fully delivered on his service and timing commitments. Truth be told he actually over delivered as the wood was a perfect match to an adjacent room, there was no mess and he removed old carpets which was beyond the brief. The workmanship was great and I'm delighted. No hesitation in recommending this company. "
